Membership Committee presentation
Tom Arkell and Ron Sloan were the tag-team for this week's program. Ron began by introducing Tom Arkell, responsible for Community Activities at Brock. He is also our second vice-president, and therefore our Membership Chair.
Tom repeated our goal - one new member per club, and reminded us that our District Governor will be with us on October 20 to ensure that we are striving toward our goal.
Last year we recruited 15 new members but lost 16. The numbers are great, but the arithmetic stinks.
He explained that by having Joyce Western assisting with registration at our club that we hope to tidy up our actual attendance. (Some of our older members have admitted that they don't check in because they can't read the attendance check-off sheets!)
Ron Sloan came forward to talk about the process of recruiting new members. He described the friendliness he felt when he came to his first meeting, and reminded us to extend that feeling to others. He pointed us to a guide-sheet on "How to Recruit a New Member."
Bala Kathiresan came forward to speak about his experiences being a new member. He described the first year as difficult, especially in fitting into the existing membership cliques. He felt that being engaged in the club would have encouraged him to belong. Howard Lackie's talk about Polio Plus' efforts in India, impacted strongly on his recognition of the value of Rotary. He suggested that Rotarians other than your sponsor should reach out to welcome new members.

President Larry told us a Rotary fact about membership retention. It has been an issue since the beginning. Two of the four founders of Rotary resigned shortly after joining. Despite those shaky beginnings, Rotary has grown to what it is today.
Sam Walters rose to announce that we have 70 items in-hand for the TV Auction, which is 6% of our goal.
