Janet is also the Vice-Chair of Literacy Link Niagara, and a member of the advisory committee of the Learning Disabilities Association of Ontario. Pat Rooney led a round of Thanksgiving trivia: some protest was heard when the first Thanksgiving in Canada was said to be conducted by the explorer John Frobisher, given that there was no "Canada" until 1867!

After the 10 day notice, a motion was made by Betty-Lou Souter, seconded by Bill Finley that the Club send $10,000 US to Rotary Dist. 6200 (Louisiana) for hurricane relief. A motion to table was defeated and the main motion was carried.

50/50 - The Queen of Spades and accompanying $113 eluded Henry Klassen.

After an introduction by Marg Jarrell, Gordon spoke of the Salvation Army's disaster relief efforts, and his own person involvements in such areas as Ground Zero after 9/11, India and South-east Asia after the Tsunami, and Honduras after hurricane Mitch in 1999. Currently, the Army is active in relief efforts in the southern US after hurricanes Katrina and Rita. In partnership with Rotary International, the Salvation Army distributes "shelter boxes" when homes are lost. As an NGO, the Army can go into places that RI can't get to directly. Sometimes relief comes in the form of hot meals, served at the rate of 50,000/day from mobile kitchens. Other times, more permanent assistance is provided by the building of homes.
Although Gordon mused about the strength of the human spirit that disasters often reveal, he reminded us of our need to be thankful for the prosperity we enjoy. In his words: "We are truly blessed".
President Larry was then presented with a boxed "disaster meal" to sample at home. We look forward to his full report!

Gordon Armstrong |
Ian Ladd thanked our speaker and President Larry added his thanks.

President Larry then told a story about the beginnings of World Community Service in Rotary in 1914 in the UK and Ireland, and shortly thereafter with disaster relief in Texas, and Tokyo.
