Celebration of Indian Culture and presentation on Polio Immunization (Howard Lackie)
Art Wing introduced Howard and Marilyn Lackie as our guest speakers. Their subject centered on their recent trip to India to help fellow Rotarians with Polio immunization efforts.
Prior to their talk Howard dedicated today's program to the memory to past member Alex Elliott.
Howard and Marilyn joined 25 fellow Rotarian volunteers from parts of Canada and the United States on a journey to the Delhi region of India. While there they assisted with and observed efforts to treat and eradicate polio.
Highlights of their trip included visiting one of Mother Teresa's orphanages, a leper camp and a mobile camp where prosthetics are fabricated for polio victims. At this camp patients are assessed and fitted within one day. Over 800 limbs were fabricated within 5 days. Most of these pieces are grude by western standards but extremely practical and efficient in India. A cost effective, flexible "J" foot is used for lower limbs.
The Lackie's observed and assisted with the national immunization day. This one day event was able to vaccinate over 168 million children under the age of 5 across India. A few drops of the oral vaccine are all that is needed to remove the crippling effects of polio.
After their volunteer work the couple enjoyed many sights and traditions shared with gracious hosts.
Following their talk, Howard and Marilyn presented our club with a Paul Harris Fellowship award in recognition of the hard work that our club puts forth. Betty-Lou accepted the award on behalf of the club and thanked the Lackies.
Bala Kathiresan thanked the Lackies for their talk and for the work they did in his native land.
