Betty and Janet Johnston have worked hard to establish this committee and their hard work paid off with a District award in 06. All of our clubs speakers are thanked by recognition of a donation on their behalf to a literacy project. March is literacy month and in keeping with this our club will be having a book drive on March 8th.

HAPPY DOLLARS
Mary Margaret Murphy led off happy dollars by saying she was happy that Rick Evan was able to fit her with some new glasses. Mary Margaret also told a joke but I can’t repeat it because it reflected badly upon a much maligned group of members.

Program
Janet Johnstone
The subject of today’s program was literacy. Janet Johnston introduced our guest speaker who was Tania Lutz. The format was of a question and answer form followed by questions from the members.
Janet began by describing how literacy’s goal is to increase the literacy of children and adults in developing countries. To be literate is to have the ability to understand and use language. There is a wide range of proficiency in different people’s ability.
Tania is currently a student in the literacy program. Although she has above average strength in visual and spatial areas she has difficulty in understanding what she reads and communicating ideas of what she has read. While listening to people, she often fads in and out and then attempts to piece together bits of information to understand what she has been told. This has led to frustration and a lack of confidence when trying to cope at school or work. The literacy centre has been teaching her techniques to increase her comprehension skills.
Tania has dreamed of having a career and hopefully her new skills can help to bridge the gap between her current situation and future goals.
Tania and Janet answered several questions from the club.
Norma Medulun thanked today’s speakers.
