Kim Widdicombe, Chair of the Seniors Committee, would appreciate knowing of any past Rotarians who are living in long term care facilities or retirement homes – please let her know.
John Potts, Chair of the Membership Committee, announced that our Club achieved over 70% attendance over last Rotary Year. Please make sure that when doing make-ups, you hand in your makeup card. Brock Student Health Services
-
Valerie Jaeger and Melodie Shick-Porter
Don Fraser introduced Vanessa, and Melodie. He noted that he was Brocks first Medical Director (1968) when the school boasted 2,000 students. He enjoyed help from Dr. Don Lorrimer and Dr. George Fitzpatrick.
Dr. Valerie Jaeger stated that Brock’s Student Health Services is responsible for Primary care for the student body. This includes academic support, mission and research. They have a responsibility to educate the students and themselves and to perform asthma research. They fulfill a public health role on campus and provide addiction support in the areas of smoking, alcohol and gambling. They work to educate the students for a healthy lifestyle behavior.
Melodie, the Director of University Medical Services, has been at Student Services for 20 years. The student body has grown from the 2,000 students that Don tended to 17,500 today. They have Dr. Jaeger plus 15 other part time physicians, 9 nurses and administration staff of 9. In addition, they employ 40 students to help with lifestyle and health promotions. They see, on average, 140 students per day across office hours from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. The majority of their work runs along the lines of colds and flu; however, they are also faced with more complex problems including asthma, nervous disorders and depression.
Both speakers impressed how different this generation, the Millennium Generation, is from our own. The students are all ‘special’ in their own eyes; attempt to negotiate around rules; see themselves as independent while still being very connected to their parents (have ‘helicopter’ parents); have been sheltered from failure (and consequently don’t now how to deal with it at school); and are ‘pack’ animals (work and play in packs texting, emailing etc). Dr. Jaeger provided several humorous examples of each.
In the end, they know they make a difference in the lives of the students (140/day x 5 days/week x 4 weeks/month x 8 months / year = 22,400 office visits per year) and every once in a while one of them remembers this help after they graduate.

Ian Ellingham
Ian Ellingham pointed out that some of the students described might become future Rotarians. He thanked Valerie and Melodie for their presentation.
President Tom thanked our speakers and presented them with a dictionary that is being donated in their names

50/50 draws
The cash draw was initiated 34 years ago when you purchased 2 tickets for $10! In 1988 we switched to the 50/50 concept and in 1997 we adopted the deck of cards. Earlier today Ross Macdonald, Chair of the Dinner & registration Committee noted that recently the Committee doubled the price to play and twice the number of tickets are sold each week. The draw now nets the Club $3,000 per year.
